The Story of Ceylon Coffee

The Story of Ceylon Coffee

It Is believed that Arabian travelers introduced coffee to Sri Lanka, but it was the British that started commercial coffee cultivation in this Island nation in the early 1800s. The climate in the central highlands of Sri Lanka is ideal to grow high quality Arabica coffee.
However during the latter part of the 19th Century a severe leaf fungus destroyed most of the crop and forced planters to shift to tea.

Even though more tolerant and better quality Arabica verities was introduced,
coffee never picked up and returned to it’s former glory... until recently..!!

Major growing areas for Arabica type coffee is Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale and Badulla, higher than 800m altitude.
Robusta type coffee prefers altitudes lover than 800 meters. robusta is grown in Kegalle, Kurunegala, Kandy and Matale and total extent of coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka is approximately 60,000 ha.

Coffee cultivation is mostly done as a mixed crop together with other commercial crops such as tea, clove and nutmeg.

We hand pick the finest Arabica beans and use wet processing to remove cherry husk. We only 'sun dry' the beans and do not use industrial dryers.
